Prizes create breakthrough innovations, help innovators thrive and unlock systemic change.

iIMPACT uIMPACT Innovation Foundation’s GREENR and UMODEL competitions and awards will focus on sustainable progress and scalable solutions.

Right now, we have an opportunity to rethink the economy and imagine how a green recovery could take place. We need to leapfrog towards collaboration, co-creation and co-production to achieve faster and more impactful outcomes.

OUR COMPETITIONS

We believe that small things can have a big impact to change our world.

Our GREENR Competition will look into leading practices and innovative ideas to integrate social and economic growth with an accelerated transition to a resilient green future.
Imagine an acorn growing into a tree: from little acorns, sturdy oak trees grow, representing improved quality of life at the local level and socio-economic development at national and international levels.
In GREENR, the “R” stands for many things:

GREENR also relates to:

  • Natural and/or cultural heritage;
  • Greenspaces;
  • Sustainable management practices;
  • Endangered spaces;
  • Responsible land or water-based investment practices; and
  • Connecting protection, tourism, natural heritage, recreation, research, education and outreach to co-exist in a positive way.

A GREENR person has courage and resiliency, and with very little, has had a big impact by achieving a great “R” which can be adapted and applied somewhere else.

Our inaugural GREENR AWARD will focus on supporting projects that reflect Sustainable Development Goals 13 (Climate Change), 14 (Life Under Water) and 15 (Life on Land).

This year we are looking for projects that demonstrate:

  • Breakthrough or innovative solutions to difficult environmental and climate change challenges.
  • Sustainable management and protection of marine and coastal ecosystems.
  • Conservation, restoration, and sustainable use of land, forests, mountains, natural habitats, cultural heritage green spaces, and freshwater ecosystems.
  • Green entrepreneurship for positive impact and resilient green growth.
  • Community centred or social enterprise green initiatives (in particular, connecting protection, tourism, natural heritage, recreation, research, education, outreach, and economic development to co-exist in a positive way for people and planet).

We are targeting projects in Mauritius, Rwanda and Uganda this year!

Our award will take place on 11 November 2021. Send your projects and proposals to kelly.culver@iuimpact.com before 30 October 2021. Your proposal document should be no more than 5 pages and should include your business plan, how your project links to our criteria, and the SDG you will be supporting. All confidentialities will be observed.

Experts have long believed that prizes spur innovation. Harvard and the Norwegian Business School have established a correlation between awards for agricultural inventions in the 1800s with patents registered by winners. Their evidence demonstrates that prizes led to significant improvements in the quality of technological invention and innovation.
This is the impetus for our UMODEL Competition.

In the 1880s the Ontario Ministry of Agriculture and Arts awarded prizes for the Best Managed Farm, using similar principles as the Royal Agricultural Society of England. Gold, silver, and bronze awards identified innovative practices in winning farms. The Commissioner of Agriculture and Arts integrated these innovations into farming standards and practices in their annual report to Parliament. Our Founder’s family farm won gold and silver medals for best managed farm in Ontario multiple times in the 1880s, earning the right to be called The Model Farm of Norfolk County, a name which continues to this day. These innovations changed agricultural practices across Ontario.
